Time for Me: Part 3 - Clothing and enter to win $100 Visa gift card

This is sponsored content from BlogHer and Olay.

As most of you know, I focus most of my sewing efforts on my children as well as my children’s clothing line.  After posting my “Shawl Collar Sweater Tutorial” I started thinking that I should take some time here and there and make something for myself.

For the last three years, since I have been either pregnant or nursing, I feel like my wardrobe has been all over the place.  I’ve got maternity clothes, just had a baby post-pregnancy clothes, sort of just had a baby post pregnancy clothes, and my “I still feel like I need to lose 5-10lbs after having a baby” clothes (which is where I currently stand).  But whether or not those 5 or 10 pounds is ever going to come off is definitely a mystery.  So in the meantime, I need to make sure I feel great in all of my current clothing.

I find too often that women wait until they reach their ideal body shape or weight before buying clothing that makes them feel good.  Well, that’s pretty silly, isn’t it? What if we never reach that ideal?  We are going to go our whole life in clothes we "so-so" like?   Well, I’m not going to let myself go there.  I’m going to make sure I love all of the pieces in my wardrobe and I think I will add to my current collection with some of these fabulous women’s clothing tutorials.  Who’s with me?

Here are just a handful on my current “to-do” list.

  1. Billy Cardigan by No Big Dill on Luvinthemommyhood
  2. Dress to skirt refashion by Lindsey from The Pleated Poppy
  3. Cape Pattern by Burda Style
  4. Vintage hankie cardigan refashion by Disney from Ruffles and Stuff

8.  Autumn Ruffle Leaf Tee by Amy from Positively Splendid
9.  Ruffle Shirt by Make It and Love It
10. Shirt to dress refashion by Made by Lex

So now that I’ve got my skin-care regime down with my Olay Total Effects 7-in-1 Moisturizing Lotion with Cooling Hydration, my new make-up and some new wardrobe items, what’s left?  Accessories!  Check back next week when I round-up some fabulous accessories tutorials and a chance to win another $100 Visa gift card!

  1. I think my biggest wardrobe problem is because I am a stay-at -home mom now. I'm pretty much the same size post-pregnancy (with twins, yay me!). But I find it impossible to justify wearing anything other than jeans, sweatpants, etc.

But now that my girls are a little older (2.5 yo), I've been trying to dress it up a little. Add a cute frilly shirt with jeans. But I definitely need to try harder.

I wish I could sew. :( Those patterns you posted are adorable. But if the Cottage Mama started offering clothes for mommies, of course, I'd be excited. :)

  3. I have had the Billy Cardigan by No Big Dill in my bookmarks for too long but haven't had time to get it started...maybe when my mom is in town for Christmas!
I am actually in better shape now then before having kids but my clothing is not. When I was working out of the home I had nice business attire, now I have "these jeans still smell clean" and "sure I wear it as a pajama top but it is also a t-shirt." It is a sad state of affairs.

  6. I am totally in limbo. Although my youngest is 14 months old, I still have 10 pounds to loose. I can wear most of my pre-pregnancy clothes, but they don't look great. Besides that, I have a generic mommy look. Never cute and dressy, just jeans and basic tops. I have a hard time venturing from solid colors. My jewelry collection was depleted over Thanksgiving when our house was robbed, so I can't even count on that making an outfit. Ugh.

  8. The Billy Cardi is on my to-do list as well! Fell in love with it during the Knits vs Sews competition! I am in pregnancy mode, but the early stages where you just look like you are gaining weight, versus preggers. Definitely need a new wardrobe at the moment, pants not fitting well - but not quite mentally ready to set up shop in Destination Maternity...argh. Lol. Thanks for hosting an awesome giveaway!

  11. I absolutely need a wardrobe makeover. I've started to go through my closet to get rid of things I haven't worn in awhile. I have bought a few new things that I like recently. I've avoided getting too much since I am not very happy with my body right now. :( I am hoping for a sewing machine form Santa. I've never sewn before but I have been inspired the past few months. I'd love to try to make something for myself. :o)

  12. That would be so awesome. I am 9 months post pregnant and slowly getting back to my old self! This one has certainly been the most challenging. He's my third and was 9lbs 3oz!

    ReplyDelete
  13. My wardrobe definitely needs serious updating...recently moved to a much colder climate than where I was before which is finding me quite chilly in my classic toms and short sleeved shirts with light cardis...that's a problem.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Great tutorial roundup! I'll definitely be trying some of those AFTER I have this baby that's currently residing in my uterus :) It does take a while to lose those post preggo pounds, and I'm with ya'll, a little something new, even if you're not at your ideal weight yet really does something for your confidence!

  15. Being a stay at home mom for my 14 month old daughter is wonderful, but it has definitely shrunk the monthly budget and has left no room for luxuries like new clothes etc etc. My problem is that most of my clothes are in need of a few pieces to glam them up and make me feel like a cute mom again, not just a blah mom. Am noticing that a lot of my clothes a darker and solid colors, so I need to find some brighter pieces and print pieces to make outfits pop!

  16. I'm currently pregnant but will have the post-baby clothes problem again in January. And I stay at home so I feel guilty spending money on nice clothing! Although I need to be better about it because looking nice does make me feel better about my baby body!

  20. I need to seriously clean out my closet and get rid of all of the clothes that don't fit me right but I am so hesitant to do so because of the whole "what if" thing. (What if I actually lose a bit more weight and those fit again?) I am also a SAHM so, my day-to-day wear is fairly mundane. Sweats or comfy clothes when I'm home and jeans when I run errands. I've always had trouble finding clothes that fit me right. I really need to learn to sew my own but I am finding hard to get the time to do so.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I love to sew, but since I'm not a tailor, tops rarely fit proper. Skirts are much better, and I love to make them. But, back to the tops. That's what I need! (And changing the mindset that says, "Oh, this is still clean, even if I wore it the past two days...")

  26. Well, I'm not pregnant and I have never been pregnant, but I also haven't bought any new clothes (other than bermuda shorts on super clearance that I won't be able to wear until summer) since around October and even then it was only one shirt. I've been looking at my sad little wardrobe just dying to buy new clothes. I'm only trying to hold off until Christmas.

I like your tutorials. To be honest, I hardly ever sew anything for myself. Maybe I should try it out..after Christmas that is. : )

  28. After being a stay at home mom for a number of years now, I'm just getting ready to go back into the workforce and honestly, I really need to update my whole wardrobe. Basically I have "Mom" clothing and nothing that would be presentable for work. After the holidays, I plan I buying a few pieces to get me started.

  30. I gained way too much weight with my two pregnancies. I also haven't bought or made much of anything new because I want to lose the weight so badly. I just wear the clothes that were loose and are now fitting. I should probably give in and just buy clothes that I like. I just joined a co-op at the gym, though, so I can go even though I have two little ones at home. We'll see how well that goes.
    Thanks so much,

I like loose fitting shirts, right now & vintage inspired prints/styles & let's not forget the "holy" jeans…My weight has increased, in the past week, due to a medication that I have been put on & I can't wait to stop taking it, so I can feel better about whatever I am wearing, etc.

  59. I'm somewhat discontented with my wardrobe right now... at the awkward post nursing, have a few pounds to loose so some of my old clothes fit, some don't stage. Plus, I think my style's changing. I find clothes shopping frustrating because either it doesn't fit right, or I know I can make the same thing for so much less. Now if only I'd find the time to actually make all those clothes...

  61. I love the billy cardigan and the tablecloth skirt! I recently stopped nursing my 14 month old, am still working on losing the baby weight but have lost some, and so I'm in the awkward phase phase where nothing fits! 123. How do you feel about your wardrobe? Are you in limbo with your post-pregnancy body? What fashion sewing tutorials are on your to-do list?

My wardrobe essentially sucks! Like you stated in your post, I am waiting until I hit my ideal weight to buy nice clothes. I had my third baby three months ago and my body just isn't what it used to be. I have a variety of sizes in my closet and many things don't have a mate or match. I struggle to find something to wear each day that 1)fits, 2)matches, 3)doesn't have spit up on it, 4) isn't covered in dog hair. I had already printed out the autumn leaf shirt tutorial and want to do something similar with all the solid color tees I have in my drawers!

  124. right now i am trying to dress more feminine and wear more dresses that flatter my body. normally i am a "comfy" girl but i am crossing over to the feminine side one piece at a time. now if i would only actually wear those pieces. baby steps right?

  132. My wardrobe problem is that I have pay to shop for Walmart Level wardrobe but what I would love to be able to shop for is what I see some of the celebirties on TV. Plus I sspend most my money on my kids. See I would love to but some of the outfits I see the character fiona wears on "Burn Notice" Because they are so safisticated but I looked up some of the clothes I have seen her wear and they range from $300-$800 an outfit. I will never be able to aford that. What I would love this season is a nice for fitted sweater that compliments my build. After my baby I weighed 173 but now I am down to 139 finally and still dieting:-) My son is now a year old. So I am finally comfortable with my body! It took lots of work! LOL!

  170. My wardrobe has skinny clothes that I may never fit into again; fat clothes that are (at last) starting to hang a little loosely; hand-me-downs that I would never buy for myself, but it saves me money; and cute skirts that fit, but I can't wear nice shoes because of problems with my feet. Honestly, the sewing I want to do is mostly costume reproductions from movies, because I'm weird that way.

  171. Though I don't have a post-pregnancy body I feel like I do. I am not happy with my wardrobe what so ever and I haven't bought a new item is so long because I hate trying on clothes. I have about 5 different sizes of clothes in my closet and that's not great either.
