Time for Me (part 1 – Skin Care) and enter to win $100 Visa gift card

This is sponsored content from BlogHer and Olay.

For the last almost three+ years I have either been pregnant or nursing.  Yes, that’s right.  I had my daughter Savannah and then when she was 7 months old I found out I was pregnant with my younger daughter Matilda.  Two weeks ago I finally got my body back.  After 15-months of nursing my daughter Matilda, I finally decided it was time to wean.  I’d definitely say weaning was a bittersweet time for me.  But all and all, I think it’s a little bit more on the sweet side.

Pregnancy and nursing have definitely caused a shift in hormones, so what once felt like a fool-proof beauty regime, just hasn’t been doing the trick for me lately. With all of these changes going on, I was thrilled to be asked to test out a new beauty product for Olay.

I have been using Olay’s Total Effect 7 in 1 Anti-Aging with Cooling Hydration moisturizing lotion for several weeks and I have to say it’s a definite winner!  I have used many different beauty products over the years, but Olay has been one that I have come back to time and time again.

I love the lightweight feel of this moisturizer.  I have been using one pump in the morning and one pump at night before bed for the last several weeks.  My skin has felt more evenly toned and I have noticed definite improvement around my eyes.  With two children under the age of three, I need all the help I can get around my eyes!

I typically have very sensitive skin, so I was a little nervous about trying this product.  But luckily I felt some reassurance in the fact that I have never had any reactions to Olay products.  Olay’s new moisturizer kept my skin feel hydrated all day (which is hard to do in this cool Chicago fall air).

How long did you all nurse your children?  Or did you go straight to formula?  Did you have any skin care issues post-pregnancy?

  1. I had 2 college students when at 41 I found out I was pregnant. I nursed for about 6 weeks then with issues(probably my age) I went to formula. My skin is horribly splotchy!!

  2. I've never been pregnant. But after coming off a certain medication, the hormone shift is making my skin horribly oily. I feel like I'm a teenager again!

  3. I am still nursing my 14 month old a couple of times a day, although we are working on weaning. My skin has been really bad post pregnancy this time. My face is like a teens, always breaking out.

  4. I tried nursing Zoë for 6 weeks until I found out I wasn't producing enough milk. Even after taking fenugreek and pumping, I wasn't able to increase the supply. I continued pumping to give her at least some BM until 9 months, however, she had mostly formula. I didn't have any skin care issues post pregnancy, however, I am totally into the Time for Me idea.

  5. I have 3 boys and nursed them all. My oldest is now 7 and I nursed him for 9 months, my second son is now 5 and I nursed him for over 2 years and my 3rd son is 1 1/2 and I nursed him for 11 months. All were very different but I felt like a pro once I got to my 2nd and 3rd sons. I loved it! And not having to make a bottle and clean them was the BEST part, plus I always had food for my baby and it was FREE! If we have more kiddos I will do the same. It is very rewarding and worth the time. My skin did get dry each time I nursed (and after pregnancy)but I don't have very sensitive skin so a daily facial moisturizer was the best cure for me. Thanks!

  6. I went straight to formula when my little man was born. I had heart problems and we knew open heart surgery was in my very near future, so formula feeding made sense for us. My skin post pregnancy is very dry and has lost some of its tone.

  7. I nursed for about 6 months and then it became too difficult to pump at work. As a teacher, I have no free time! My skin actually looks better now than before.

  10. My first son did not tolerate breast feeding well and rejected nursing after 4 weeks and preferred formula. My second son weaned himself after about 6 months. My skin tends to be dry but was horrible after pregnancy, so an increase in water consumption and loads of cocoa butter helped me...

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  11. My oldest didn't like nursing at all so I pumped for 6 weeks and gave her formula. That was great. BUT my youngest who is now 7 months... only wants to nurse. She doesn't want to take a bottle. I have tried pumped milk and formula. I can get her to take it but it is usually a battle.... a battle that I am not really wanting to fight. I would like for her to take the bottle though... it would help me wean her and well give me some time to go do something by myself. I am a person that needs alone time and this has been difficult for me. I have had her with me non-stop for 7 months bc she won't take a bottle for anyone. This is a season and it will be over soon I know. I am not complaining but just saying what is going on for me. I have some skin issues going on as well. I totally GET why you are doing these posts!!!! Sister I totally get it! I am right there with you!!!! :)

  12. Yes, my skin was definitely worse the second time around. I only nursed my daughter Savannah for 4 months because she had latching and weight-gain issues. I think whatever works for your family and makes Mama happy is the way to go! Matilda just loved nursing and it was free and easy. I'm actually glad I got to experience both (formula and nursing). Thank you guys for joining in the conversation!

  13. I nursed for 6 months. I tried to do it exclusively, but the baby was still so fussy and hungry that after 3 months we started supplementing with formula... supplementing changed my life for the better! I am pregnant again with #2 and am interested in nursing again, but after my first experience will have no problem supplementing. My skin is for the most part is good, but I have my trouble zone on the chin, and when they come in, they look like mountains!

  14. My twins were preemies in the NICU. Since they started out on TPN (IV line for nutrition) and had feeding issues, we weaned them from TPN right on to a higher calorie formula. Both girls at 2.5 years old are normal and healthy (although one twin is pretty skinny). :)

I have always had sensitive skin. Now that I am in my mid 30s, I realize I probably need to try something new! Thanks for the review on Olay's Total Effects. Sounds like something I should try!

  15. Great giveaway, and I LOVE your theme! I nursed all three of mine. I nursed the oldest (10) for 17 months, I went back to work when he was a year old and we quickly went to him just nursing at bedtime. I was afraid of weaning completely, one because I was working and I thought it would lead to sleeping issues, and two because after a long day at work I enjoyed that cuddle time. My second son (8) weaned himself at about 11 months, he was just WAY to busy to stay still for nursing, but that was okay because he was already drinking from a cup very well. My daughter (2) nursed until around 13 months. I suffered through dry skin each time, and still struggle with it. Thanks for the Olay review. I need some new moisturizer and have been debating whether to find a new Beauty Consultant, or go with something from the store.

  16. I nursed both of my kids for six months and will nurse the one who will join our lives in January for probably the same. Although I did have big kids so started supplementing with formula at 4 months which made weening much easier.

Children have changed my skin. I had really clear skin, even as a teenager, until I had children. Still working on finding a good solution!

  17. Nursed my son until I was three months pregnant and he was 15 months old and I am still nursing my 14 month old. I go back and forth between wanting to wean and wanting her to nurse until she shows some sign - any sign of stopping. My skin is definitely still oily but more sensitive, and in the last three years I feel like I have aged 10!

  18. My son was born with Down Syndrome and had several severe medical issues including one that required him to be fed strictly by IV for two weeks. The combination of poor health and not being allowed to eat by mouth for an extended period led to him being a very poor eater. I pumped exclusively for three months until my milk dried up from stress. My son had two major surgeries at three months (in Dec. to add a little more stress) of age and prolonging my milk supply was just no longer important. Our daughter is adopted and was formula fed. I have very sensitive skin and tend to stick to products I've used with success. I don't tend to try a lot of new products.

  19. Charlotte I nursed for 14 months and she just was done on her own. It was a gradual. I was prego prior to ending nursing with my oldest so I never got my body back ether. Delilah was born and I nursed for about 3 months. I had a bad infection from the delivery. Well it was from working way too hard, and over doing it after the birth. It was so bad I was in the hospital on IV antibiotics for 2 weeks. I couldn't nurse at that time. I tried to pump but being sick and feeling bad all the time I didn't keep up with it like I should have and dried up. Poor LaLa only got it for 3 months. I regret that so much.
I have had the worst skin issues since the girls. I have VERY sensitive skin. I am alergic to most products and currently use nothing. Every moisturizer makes me break out in hives, and cleaning products dry it out so bad it turns red and cracks. I gently wash with H2O alone. Nothing else. It makes my skin dry but not so dry it cracks and peals. I need a drs. help but it is hard to get to one with two small girls. Any way, hope I win.

  20. I couldn't nurse because I developed appendicitis and had to go back to the hospital to have my appendix taken out. My son did fine on formula. I didn't have any skin issues.

  25. I nursed my dtr til 15 months and now my son is 15 months and a horribly picky eater would not take formula so I continue to nurse and work on him getting calories from food. My skin was horrible with my dtr. And very dry now with my son. I understand the difficulties with breast feeding but if you can tolerate it is a wonderful gift for your babies!!!!

  26. I nursed my 3 kids for 3 months, 3 weeks, and 6 weeks. Sadly, I was one of the people that never had good luck nursing. I always envied those that could nurse longer! Thanks for a chance to win!

  27. I nursed all three of my children. They pretty much let me know when they were done :-) My last baby nursed until he was one. I never really had any issues with skin care while nursing, but as I have gotten older my skin has become dryer. Thanks for a great giveaway :-)

  28. I wasn't able to nurse either of my two children, for some reason my body didn't produce milk despite several efforts and advice from lac. consultants.
Although it was disappointing, my babies were healthy and did fine with formula.

  29. I nursed my son until he was 2 1/2, and I'm currently nursing my 3 month old daughter. With both kids my skin got dry while I was pregnant and took a little time postpartum to recover.

  30. I'm still nursing my 17-month-old. I do have skin issues, but since I've started washing my face with oil it has been much better!

  31. I'm still nursting my 7-month-old, and probably will continue up to one year if she wants to. She does take about 2 oz of formula a day. My skin has been a nightmare for the past year since I couldn't use my usual acne lotions and creams. And now my skin is soooo dry this winter! I've used the same stuff since junior high. Maybe it's time for something different. "Cooling hydration" sounds lovely. :)

  32. I ATTEMPTED to nurse my daughter for only 2 weeks and nursed my son while tube feeding and supplementing for about 2 months. Motherhood has not been kind to my skin so I would love to try out this product!

  33. I nursed DD #1 for six weeks, and DD #2 would have nursed the rest of her life, but I cut her off at 17 months. Finally at 40 my skin is not so oily, but the tradeoff appears to be wrinkles. I sure could use some time for me!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I nursed ODD for 12 months. She also got formula since I worked and couldn't pump enough for her. She quit nursing on her own at 12 months. I nursed YDD for about 12 months also. She also got formula but very little..when we were out or she was in the church nursery..things like that. I weaned her at 12 months. DS was a totally different story!! I tried to nurse him but he wanted no part of it...I fought it for almost 3 months before finally giving in and switching him to formula. It was the best decision I've ever made. He was a completely different baby...so much happier. My skin and hair are so much different than before my kids. It changed the most after having my son. My skin and hair are quite oily now and I have frequent breakouts. I would love to try something different to help out my skin!!

  35. I exclusively nursed my oldest daughter for six months then did a formula/ breastmilk combo. I have been nursing my baby for 15 months now. My skin has gotten drier and more sensitive the longer I have nursed, but I'm not sure it is because of nursing.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I nursed for 3 months. My skin was SOOOO dry during the whole process; especially on my face. It's gotten a little better since I haven't been nursing for 2 months but I still suffer from dry flakey skin on my forehead region.

  37. I nursed my first until he was a year and then I found out I was pg with my second. I can't wait to nurse again. I had more acne during pregnancy but otherwise it was pretty normal.

  41. I nursed my daughter Zoe for 20 months and I am still nursing my 21 month old son. I had a lot of trouble the first couple of months with my daughter, but managed to nurse through a year of full time work and a move across the country. Nursing my son has been much easier. My skin was fine during pregnancy, but of late, has been a lovely mix of teenage problems mixed with dry old lady skin. I'm not sure what is going on.

  43. I am still nursing my first son, who is just over 2 months old. Both the pregnancy and thereafter I've struggled with my skin being more oily and breaking out - something to do with increased estrogen levels I've heard. Definitely makes me feel like a teenager again...

  44. I nursed all six of my kiddos for about 8 months, but used formula to supplement or when I was out. I still remember the day I stopped with my last baby. Bittersweet for sure!

  45. I am still nursing my almost 17 month old daughter (only child right now) at bedtime only. I didn't plan on nursing this long but it's hard for me to cut her off! :( We're starting to TTC baby #2 now and that is my motivation. My skin was great during my pregnancy, but normally it tends to be dry. I am way into anything anti-aging these days. I want to look as young as I can without having any surgery! ;)

  46. Good for you for nursing so long! I nursed my son for about 11 months and we were both DONE at that point. Weaning was super easy. I can't say that I love nursing, but it's free, easy, and wonderful nutrition for your baby! Plus it burns all those calories! I plan on nursing the baby girl in my belly if all goes well. My skin is a mess! I've always had a great complexion, but I've been breaking out and my pores are enlarged. Yuck! Thanks for the giveaway!

  50. Oh, nursing.... What a roller coaster! With my first daughter, I tried and tried! She was premature by a month, and we had to supplement with formula. I nursed, pumped and then gave her formula, she ate about every hour. I gave up at three months and switched to just formula. With my second daughter (who arrived 18 short months later) nursing was a breeze and IMO so, so much more convenient than all those bottles! Not for everyone, I know, but for me it was. I am a SAHM and it was just nice. I nursed her for 22 months, and then I caught on I was just her pacifier and weaned her. Now she is 4 1/2 and I wish I could go back once in a while to her being six months.

As for my skin, it has been SO much more DRY since I had my girls! I need to take better care of it. But I fall into bed at night and don't moisturize as I should. At least I wash my face!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I nursed all three of my boys. The first two are so old now I can't remember how long I nursed them (they're in their 20's) but I think one was around 5 months and the other 18 months. At the age of 40 I found out I was prego again! I nursed that son until he was around 2 1/2..so much easier for me since he was a fussy baby. I didn't have any skin problems that I can remember, which is surprising since I got very little sleep with 2 teenagers and an infant to keep up with! :)

  52. I nursed all three of my kiddos, the first for 12 months, the second for 13 months and the 3rd for 14 months. I have very fair skin, so sun exposure has taken its toll on my skin.

  53. I nursed both my kids, my daughter for 6 months and my son for 4 months. I supplemented with formula while I nursed so I stopped when they were eating more formula then milk. I really enjoyed being able to do it.

  63. I nursed my daughter for 12 months & I have to say, her 1st birthday was one of my most favorite days, because I knew we were weaning!! I had the same intentions for nursing my son, however I contracted mastitis & the medication needed to clear up the infections caused me to dry up, so I was only able to nurse him for 10 months. He was so close to the 12 month mark, that I went ahead and gave him organic whole milk with DHA, instead of formula; I checked with our pediatrician, before making this decision. As for skin problems, I have been blessed & do not feel that I encountered any due to hormone change…due to the sun, YES.

  64. I too have been pregnant and/or nursing since January of 2007 (I have a 3 yr, 2 yr, and 10 month old). I was only able to nurse my youngest for 8 months, but I have noticed a HUGE change in my skin condition since then (plus we also moved to Colorado which is SO dry!). I would LOVE a chance to try something new with my skin care routine.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I've nursed all 3 of my kiddies for a total of 22 months but have been blessed with a HUGE milk supply, so I always pumped a lot & had milk in the freezer for an additional 9 months(total).

    ReplyDelete
  66. when my daughter was born I wanted to nurse exclusively but was having supply issues. Pumping increased my supply so that I was able to actually able to have enough to store for later use which ended up being a great thing when I got sick and was put on medication that wasn't safe for nursing. I ended up "pumping and dumping" for a couple of weeks while she drank the stored milk. After that I never really was able to get ahead of her again. She developed GERD and to keep her off of medication we put rice cereal in with the expressed milk. I loved the convenience of pumping at set times and having her eat whenever/wherever she wanted and having help with the feedings. It seemed to be the best of both worlds for us. She got the health benefits and we got the economic benefits of breast milk with the convenience of bottle feeding. I had trouble keeping my supply up toward the end of her first year so we had to supplement with a few ounces of formula. Once the Dr gave the okay at her 1-yr checkup I stopped pumping and she went to having soy or cow's milk in sippy cups. She was bottle free at 12.5 months.

  83. I am pregnant with my first and my skin is going crazy. I am still holding out hope that it will go back to normal after I give birth!

  84. I definitely never had that pregnancy or post-pregnancy glow! My youngest is two and I still feel like my skin is behaving like it did when I was a teen.

  85. I didn't get to nurse my first. She was premature, and my milk didn't come in. My second was full term and I nursed him for 7 months. I didn't experience any skin problems until after I quit nursing. My skin went crazy. I got acne, dry spots and red splotches everywhere! It was awful. It eventually went back to normal when all my hormones went back to normal!

  86. After 3 kids in which all were nursed, I feel like my skin has finally had it. I too use Olay and love it. I have very sensitive skin so I haven't been brave enough to try the anti aging product you mentioned. Curious if the moisturizer has spf in it?

  87. I have one baby who is 3 months. I nursed him for 2 months. It was a difficult 2 months... He couldn't latch on on his own, he was a very slow eater, and I just wasn't making enough milk. I hope I can nurse my baby longer. As for my skin, I feel like Dancin' Momma (3 comments above me) No pregnancy glow, skin still like when I was teen.

  116. I wasn't able to nurse any of my 3 children..I tried but I just wasn't a milk producer. My skin, on the other hand, went nuts when I was pregnant..I never had such horrible looking skin until my hormones went nutty during pregnancy. It took months after the birth for it to finally calm down.
